Riding on the bike path around Tisza lake

When setting out on this cycling adventure, our goal was to discover Lake Tisza on two wheels. We got to see the wildlife and people enjoying water sports (boating, jet skiing, fishing, camping, swimming, canoeing).

Lake Tisza is the largest artificial lake in Hungary. Located in NE of Hungary, it’s a cheaper alternative to the traditional most well-known waterside holiday location in Hungary that is Lake Balaton.

98% of the loop is car-free which makes it a safe ride. This route is flat which makes it accessible to all types of riders (solo, social, family, etc.). For the racer in you, there is an event (Tour de Tisza-tó) held every May on this cycling path.

There is no point in carrying crazy amounts of snacks and drinks on the bike as every small beach resort that you cross has small bars or shops (every 20-30 minutes) where you can refuel. Bring cash, not all places accept card payment!

It was a scorching heat that day, so we had to stop a few times for hydration. We very much enjoyed a café stop at Süllö Fészek (good coffee, English-speaking staff and clean restrooms) – all the essentials.

The cycling path has practically no trees so on a sunny day, while you are pedalling you are basically all the time in direct sunlight. If you want to be in the shades, you’ll have to stop and hide under the trees bordering the lake or look for coffee shops and beach bars… or dip your toes in the lake.
